August Schuler Reform Pistol - Suhl, Germany

August Schuler Reform Pistol serial number 5123.  This interesting 4-barrel (barrel length 75mm..with 4 grooves) German - Suhl double action pistol chambered in .25 ACP was first constructed around the turn of the 20th century and patented in 1906 as "Deutsches Reichspatent Nr 177023" (the patent-number is marked at the left side of the barrel-block together with the German nitro-powder proof mark...markings are crisp).  The exact start of this pistols production is unknown, but is estimated between 1907 and 1910, as the .25 ACP cartridge got popular shortly after the presentation together with the FN Browning model 1906.  The acceptance of this pistol was largely based on it´s compact design (flat and easy to carry as hidden - dimensions are length 133 mm, height 108 mm , and width 20.2 mm). When self-cocking pistols were becoming more popular this pistols technical concept was too old and the production ended.  A repetition pistol with moving barrel block. The gun works similar to a double-action revolver, pull the trigger and the barrel block rises. The empty cartridges are blown out by the gas-pressure of the following shot. For this purpose there are small drill holes between the barrels about 6 mm behind the muzzle. The cartridges bump against the hammer, and deflect so that the shooter does not get them in the face. The last cartridge has to be removed by hand.  With fixed sights and a safety lever on left side which acts on the hammer.  The grips are in good condition made of black rubber with very fine checkering which shows light wear.  Each grip panel is circular stamped. The left grip panel is stamped "REFORM/ PISTOLE/ BREVETE" and the right grip panel is stamped "REFORM/PISTOLE/DRP177023".  Each grip has the correct - matching serial number scribed on underside.  Blue metal finish with each of the 4-barrels showing light wear on sides and some very light rust.  Frame shows stronger blue with some very faint rust on each side, a couple of pits on left side, along with very light edge wear.  Trigger guard is mostly gray.  Serial number stamped on grip frame bottom.  Very hard to find collectors piece weighing in at 350 grams.
